기독교인들이 밸런타인데이를 지켜야 하는가?

왜 기독교인들이 밸런타인데이를 지킬까요?

영국 일간지 미러가 밝힌 밸렌타인 데이의 유래 두 가지는 다음과 같습니다.

‌1. 로마의 축제에서 기원
발렌타인데이는 ‘루페르칼리아’라는 로마의 축제에서 기원된 오랜 전통이라는 설이 있는데요. 원래 이 축제는 로마 농업의 신 파우누스(Faunus)를 위한 풍요 기원제로, 2월 15일에 열렸다고 합니다.
축제 기간 중 남자아이들이 상자에 담긴 여자아이들의 이름을 꺼내면 둘은 축제 기간 동안 파트너가 됐습니다. 이렇게 만난 둘이 결혼을 하는 경우도 빈번했습니다.
한편 news24에 따르면 축제 기간 중 임신이 잘되고 출산의 고통을 줄여준다는 명목으로 어린 여자아이나 여성을 채찍으로 때렸다는 이야기도 있습니다. 하지만 루페르칼리아가 위법적이라고 생각한 교황 겔라시우스가 축제를 없애고자 2월 14일을 발렌타인데이로 선포해 남녀 간의 사랑을 표현하는 날로 삼았습니다.

2. 성 발렌타인의 축일
‌로마시대 로마 황제 클라우디스 2세는 '병사가 결혼하면 사기가 떨어진다'고 생각해 병사의 결혼을 금지했습니다. 하지만 부당하다고 느낀 고대 로마의 그리스도교 성인 발렌티누스(St. Valentinus, 영어로 Valentine)는 비밀스럽게 젊은 커플들의 결혼식을 거행했습니다. 이를 알게 된 황제는 발렌타인을 감옥에 넣고 사형선고를 내렸고 결국 발렌타인은 270년 2월 14일 처형됐습니다. 이후 2월 14일 순교한 발렌타인 주교를 추모하여 '죽음을 각오하고 사랑을 고백하는 날'로 사람들에게 인식되어 이를 기념하기 위해 만들어진 날이 바로 발렌타인 데이라는 이야기가 전해져 내려오고 있습니다.

이 두 가지 중에 어느 하나일지라도

기독교인들이 밸런타인데이에 초콜렛을 선물할 이유는 없습니다.

성도라면 성도답게 세상의 풍속에 미혹이 되지 말아야 하며

그런 세상으로부터 자기 신앙을 지켜 경건하게 살아가야 합니다.

그럼 도대체 ‘발렌타인 데이’라는 것이 무엇일까.
전통적으로 2월 중순은 고대 로마인들에게는 짝을 만나고 구애하는 짝짓기 시기였다. 그것은 원래 루페르쿠스 제전(지금의 올림픽과도 비슷한 젊은이들의 축제)을 통해 확립된 관습이었다.

루페르쿠스 제전이란, 기원전 4세기 초부터 로마인들이 매년 루페르쿠스 라는 신 앞에서 그의 이름으로 축제를 거행했던 의식으로 이 기간에 젊은 남자들의 남자라는 통과의식이라는 것이 거행되었다. 그들은 상자에 담아있는 십대 소녀들의 이름을 임의로 뽑았다. 제비뽑기에 당첨된 소녀는 자신을 뽑은 남자와 동반자가 되어서 거의 일 년 동안 서로 성적인 즐거움을 즐기고 쾌락을 맛보는 시간을 보내게 하였으며 그 기간이 끝나면 다시 제비를 뽑았다.

그로부터 800년의 시간이 지나서 이런 퇴폐적인 관습을 종식시키고자 초대 기독교의 교부(敎父)들은 루페르쿠스 신을 대신할 ‘연인의 성자’를 찾았다. 그들은 약 200년 전에 순교당한 주교 발렌타인이 그럴듯한 후보자라고 생각했다.

그럼 발렌타인이란 자는 누구이길래 그가 그러한 문화의 주인공이 된 것일까.
서기 270년 경, 당시 로마의 황제였던 클로디우스는 남자가 결혼을 하면 집을 떠나 전쟁에 나가기를 싫어하기 때문에 결국 형편없는 나약한 군인이 된다고 생각하여 돌연 금혼령을 내렸다. 제국에는 군인들이 필요했고, 백성들의 평판 따위는 별 관심을 두지 않았던 황제는 결혼제도 자체를 아예 폐지시켜 버렸던 것이다.

그러나 당시 인테람나 지역의 주교로 있었던 발렌타인은 젊은 연인들을 몰래 찾아오게 하여서 혼인식을 올려주었다. 이 사실을 알게 된 황제는 진노하여 발렌타인을 황명을 어긴 죄를 물어서 체포하였다. 황제는 젊은 주교의 위엄과 확신에 감명을 받아 그를 살려주고 싶은 마음에 로마신을 믿으라고 개종을 권유하였다. 하지만 발렌타인의 신앙의 의지는 분명했다. 오히려 황제에게 전도를 하면서 그를 개종시키려 하였다. 결국 황제는 그를 270년 2월 24일, 곤봉으로 두들겨 패고 돌질을 당하게 한 후, 효수시키고 말았다.

루페르쿠스 신 앞에서 제비뽑기로 여자 선택했던 게 ‘발렌타인 데이’ 기원

당시 기록에 의하면 발렌타인은 옥에서 처형을 기다리고 있을 때에 간수 아스테리우스의 눈먼 딸과 사랑에 빠졌다고 한다. 그리고 그의 믿음으로 그녀의 시력을 기적적으로 회복시켰다고 한다. 죽음을 눈앞에 두고 발렌타인은 그녀에게 ‘당신의 발렌타인으로부터’라는 작별인사로 서명한 편지를 남겼고 그 작별인사는 그가 죽은 후에도 계속 남게 되었다.

교회의 입장에서 이러한 발렌타인은 루페르쿠스의 인기를 빼앗을 수 있는 이상적인 후보로 보였다. 그래서 로마가 기독교를 받아들인 후, 496년 경 당시 로마의 총대주교, 그러니까 교황인 겔라시우스는 2월 중순에 거행하는 루페르쿠스 축제를 불법으로 선언하였다.

하지만 교황은 로마인들이 전통적으로 운수에 자신을 맡기는 제비뽑기를 좋아한다는 것을 알고 제비뽑기는 그냥 존속시켰다. 대신 제비뽑기 상자에는 자원한 여자들 이름 대신에 성인들의 이름이 담겨 있었다. 남자만 뽑던 전통에서 벗어나 남녀 모두 쪽지를 뽑았고 자기들이 뽑은 성인의 삶을 모방해서 다음 해를 그렇게 살도록 하게 하였다.

여자를 기대했다가 성인들의 이름을 뽑는 것은 많은 로마의 젊은이들을 실망시켰다. 이 행사를 주관하던 축제의 이름을 수호성인 발렌타인 축제라고 불렀다. 하지만 로마의 젊은이들은 매년 2월 14일에 자기가 사모하고 구애하고 싶은 여자에게 손으로 쓴 사랑의 인사를 전하는 풍습을 도입을 하여 교회의 명령과는 다르게 그들만의 새로운 풍습을 만들어 간 것이다. 이것이 ‘발렌타이 데이’의 역사이다. 그러나 이러한 풍습은 간간이 행해졌을 뿐 유럽 사회에서 거의 사라져 가고 있었다.

그런데 이 풍습을 부활시킨 자들이 있었다. 장미꽃과 초콜렛으로 발렌타인 데이를 부활시킨 장사꾼들이다. 서양에서도 이 날만 되면 꽃집과 초콜렛 가게가 불이 난다. 요즘에는 금은방도 덩달아 커플링이라는 것을 포함시켜 한 대목을 보는 것을 보게 된다. 그러고 보면 남녀의 사랑은 막을 수가 없는가 보다. 이렇게 장사꾼들도 이를 이용하여 돈을 벌 수 있으니 말이다.

How did we get the day?
In 313 A.D., Roman Emperor Constantine the Great legalized Christianity and ended Rome's persecution of Christians. In 380 A.D., Christianity becomes the OFFICIAL state religion of the Roman Empire. These actions not only enabled the teachings of Christianity to spread unhindered within the empire, it encouraged non-Christians to convert to the once-persecuted religion.

The pagans, however, who adopted Christianity as their religion did not entirely abandon the traditions and practices they held before their "conversion." One of these traditions brought into the church was the fertility celebration known as the Lupercalia, which eventually became the Valentine's holiday.

Twenty-four years after the death of Emperor Anthemius, a "Christianized" form of the festival of Lupercalia was officially adopted by the church as a time to honor Saint Valentine.

"Early Christians were happier with the idea of a holiday (Valentine's) honoring the saint of romantic causes than with one recognizing a pagan festival. In 496 A.D., Pope Gelasius named February 14 in honor of St. Valentine as the patron saint of lovers. " (How Valentine's Day Works, Apr. 1, 2000, retrieved Jan. 11, 2011)

February 14th as the day to honor this "saint" (the Catholic Church currently recognizes at least three different martyred saints named Valentine or Valentinus) stayed on the church's Calendar of Saints until 1969 A.D. Pope Paul VI removed it from the calendar.

What was the festival of Lupercalia?
The Lupercalia festival was partly in honor of Lupa, the she-wolf who (according to legend) nursed the infant orphans Romulus and Remus. Roman legend states that Romulus and Remus founded the city of Rome in 753 B.C. The pagan festival was also in honor of the Roman god Lupercus who was the god of shepherds. Lupercus was Rome's equivalent to the Greek god Pan.

The link between the Lupercalia, fertility, and romance in general is evident in the festivities that occurred during the celebrations (Valentine's Day, History Channel web site, retrieved Jan. 10, 2011).

The Greek historian Plutarch (c. 46 to 120 A.D.) also describes the Lupercalia and its relationship to fertility. The second-century Christian apologist Justin Martyr further links the worship of pagan gods to the Lupercalia when he writes of an image of "the Lycaean god, whom the Greeks call Pan and the Romans Lupercus," who is nude save for a girdle of goatskin, which stood in the Lupercal, the cave where Romulus and Remus were suckled by a she-wolf.

Red Roses
Red roses were the favorite flower of Venus, the Roman goddess of love. Red is also a color that signifies strong feelings.

Cupid
In Roman mythology, Cupid is the god of desire, affection, and erotic love. Cupid today appears shooting his bow to inspire romantic love.

The Heart
It is unclear the origin of the familiar heart shape used for Valentine's celebration. One possibility involves the now-extinct North African plant silphium. The city-state of Cyrene had a lucrative trade in the plant, which looks just like the heart shape used in modern times.

Does it MATTER?
Does it matter that the church adopted an ancient festival used to worship pagan gods and promote fertility to worship the God of the Bible? Does God really CARE what customs are used to worship and honor Him or whether or not we celebrate the Valentine's holiday? Notice the following warning God gave to ancient Israel.

"When the Lord your God cuts off from before you the nations which you go to dispossess, and you displace them and dwell in their land, take heed to yourself that you are not ensnared to follow them, after they are destroyed from before you, and that you do not inquire after their gods, saying, 'HOW DID THESE NATIONS SERVE THEIR GODS? I ALSO WILL DO LIKEWISE.' "

"You shall NOT worship the Lord your God in that way; for every abomination to the Lord which He hates they have done to their gods . . . " (Deuteronomy 12:29-31, NKJV)

Note that the issue in this passage is NOT the worship of other gods. The warning is to not adopt CUSTOMS used to worship or honor other gods in order to serve and worship the true God.

The true origin of Valentine's Day and its symbols are rooted in the worship of false gods. It has no Biblical basis. Those who celebrate the holiday and consider themselves believers in the God of the Bible need to take a prayerful look at what they are doing.
