Childhood and educationMcKnight was born in Illinois and raised in Freeport, Illinois. He earned his B.A. degree from Grand Rapids Baptist College (now known as Cornerstone University), an M.A. from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, and a Ph.D. from the University of Nottingham in 1986, where he studied under James D.G. Dunn, famous for his work on the new perspective on Paul.CareerMcKnight was the Karl A. Olsson Professor in Religious Studies at North Park University from 1994 to 2012. Prior to joining the NPU faculty in 1994, he was a professor of New Testament at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School.McKnight is a prolific author, with more than fifty books to his credit. One of McKnight's more popular books, The Jesus Creed, won the Christianity Today book award for 2004 in the area of Christian living and has spawned a number of popular small group studies and a DVD series.[5]McKnight's blog, Jesus Creed, which was formerly hosted by Beliefnet and is now hosted by Patheos, is currently one of the most popular Evangelical blogs online.[6]McKnight is a popular author and speaker on issues related to the emerging church, with his blog being named the most popular blog online related to the movement.[7][8][9] He has generally been a proponent of the movement and supported many of the movement's aims. 서구 사회에서 가장 큰 문제는 개인주의다. 우리는 우리 자신을 개인으로 볼 뿐 아니라 하나님께서 일하시는 더 큰 공동체의 한 부분으로 바라봐야 한다. 각 시대마다 이런저런 방향으로 기울어 왔는데, 지금 우리는 일방적으로 개인주의 쪽으로 치우쳐진 시대에 살고 있다.그러나 복음은 완벽한 균형을 이루고 있다. 다시 말해 하나님과 다른 이들과 개인이 사랑으로 서로 관계를 맺되 그들 각자의 온전함이 보존되는 방식으로 관계를 맺는다. 성경은 처음부터 하나님과 연합되고 다른 이들 및 세상과 교제하는 인간을 그리고 있다. 성경은 우리에게 문화에 대항하는 대안을 제시하고 있는데, 우리 세대의 많은 이들이 이 대안을 매력적인 개념으로 생각하고 있다. 성경은 우리가 그저 개인에 그치는 것이 아니라 에이콘들이라고 말한다. 우리는 단지 한 집단의 일부가 아니라 공동체 안에서 존재한다. 하나님은 결정론자가 아니라 그분의 사랑을 나눠 주시고 우리에게 그 사랑을 누릴 수 있는 자유를 주시는 분이다.본질적으로 우리는 에이콘, 즉 하나님과 관계를 맺고 이 세상의 선을 위해 다른 이들과 관계를 맺는 인간들이다. 이것이 바로 우리의 본성이다. (42-43쪽)인간은 복음의 이야기에 대해 두 가지 형태로 반응할 수 있다. 미로슬라브 볼프(Miroslav Volf)가 아주 잘 말해 주고 있듯이, 우리가 취할 수 있는 태도는 배제와 포용(Exclusion and Embrace)이다. 에덴에서 멀어지려고 토후 바-보후(혼돈하고 공허함)를 더 좋아하면서 하나님과 다른 이들에게서 우리 자신을 배제하고 우리 자신의 에이콘을 축소시키는 이들이 있다. 반면 하나님과 다른 사람들, 그리고 은혜의 순환을 포용하면서 다시 에덴을 향해 돌아가려고 하고 그 여정을 통해 마지막 잔치에 대한 소망을 발견하는 이들도 있다. 어떤 이들은 잔치보다는 혼자 먹는 쪽을 택한다. 그들은 축소하는 쪽을 선호한다.
