John G. Geier was born in Michigan to John Geier Sr. and Irene E. Bock. His father John was of Volga-German extraction and Irene was the daughter of Jewish immigrants from the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

John Jr. was a bright student and worked his way through college painting with his father, who was taught the trade by a fellow Volga-German.
