"Awesome God" is a contemporary worship song written by Rich Mullins and first recorded on his 1988 album,  Winds of Heaven, Stuff of Earth. It was the first single from the album and rose to the number one spot on Christian radio and subsequently became a popular congregational song.[1] Its title is inspired by a biblical expression (Nehemiah 1:5, Nehemiah 9:32, Psalm 47, Daniel 9:4, etc.), variously translated as "Awesome God", (JPS, in the old-fashioned meaning "awe-inspiring"), "great" (KJV), among other alternatives. Due to the popularity of the song it became Mullins' signature song.

Rich Mullins is also remembered for his devotion to the Christian faith. He was heavily influenced by St. Francis of Assisi (1181–1226). In 1997, he composed a musical called Canticle of the Plains, a retelling of the life of St. Francis set in the Old West.

Richard Mullins was born to John Mullins, a tree farmer, and Neva Mullins, a Quaker.[3] The family called him by his middle name, Wayne, which he went by until college, when his friends called him Richard. Mullins grew up attending Arba Friends Meeting, a church in Lynn, Indiana.[4] The Quaker testimonies of peace and social justice later inspired many of his lyrics. Mullins was baptized when he was in the 3rd grade.[5] His great-grandmother had taught him to play hymns in four part harmony when he was very young;[6] he began to study classical piano with a Quaker teacher while in elementary school.

An important part of Mullins' early musical experience was being the piano player, songwriter and vocalist for the New Creations Choir in Richmond, Indiana which was started by Tim and Bonnie Cummings in the early 1970s. The choir toured numerous states in its own bus and even produced a record album. New Creations is a church and school for teens and Mullins was a contributing factor in its beginning.

From 1974 to 1978, Mullins attended Cincinnati Bible College. He worked in a parking garage to help pay for his schooling.[7] From 1975 to 1978, he was the Music Director and Youth Director near Cincinnati at Erlanger United Methodist Church, Erlanger, Kentucky.[8]

In the 1980s he moved to Nashville, Tennessee to begin his professional recording career.[9] Mullins got engaged sometime between the late '70s and early '80s and had written the song Doubly Good To You (recorded by Amy Grant on her album Straight Ahead) for his upcoming wedding. However, his fiancee broke off the engagement, after which Mullins wrote Damascus Road.[10][11]

Years later Mullins shared thoughts about his relationships and personal life in a radio interview with Rick Tarrant:

I would always be frustrated with all those relationships even when I was engaged. I had a ten year thing with this girl and I would often wonder why, even in those most intimate moments of our relationship, I would still feel really lonely. And it was just a few years ago that I finally realized that friendship is not a remedy for loneliness. Loneliness is a part of our experience and if we are looking for relief from loneliness in friendship, we are only going to frustrate the friendship. Friendship, camaraderie, intimacy, all those things, and loneliness live together in the same experience...

In 1988, Mullins moved to Wichita, Kansas where, in 1991, he began pursuing a degree in Music Education at Friends University and lived with his best friend, David Strasser (a.k.a. Beaker). As part of his degree program, Mullins served as the choir director at West Evangelical Free Church. While in Wichita, he also regularly attended Central Christian Church. He graduated with a B.A. in Music Education on May 14, 1995.[12] After graduation, he and Mitch McVicker moved to a Navajo reservation in Tse Bonito, New Mexico to teach music to children. They lived in a hogan at the reservation until his death.

The profits from his tours and the sale of each album were entrusted to his church, which divided it up, paid Mullins the average salary in the U.S. for that year, and gave the rest to charity.[13] Mullins was also a major supporter of Compassion International [14] and Compassion USA.[15]

His faith can be understood by a quote he gave at a concert shortly before his death. He stated that:

Jesus said whatever you do to the least of these my brothers you’ve done it to me. And this is what I’ve come to think. That if I want to identify fully with Jesus Christ, who I claim to be my Savior and Lord, the best way that I can do that is to identify with the poor. This I know will go against the teachings of all the popular evangelical preachers. But they’re just wrong. They’re not bad, they’re just wrong. Christianity is not about building an absolutely secure little niche in the world where you can live with your perfect little wife and your perfect little children in a beautiful little house where you have no gays or minority groups anywhere near you. Christianity is about learning to love like Jesus loved and Jesus loved the poor and Jesus loved the broken-hearted...[5][16]

미국-가스펠 가수 커프 크랭클린이 동성애 및 결혼이 성경에 반한다고 생각하느냐는 질문에 대한 대답을 회피한 일로 뭇매를 맞고 있다.

스웨이 캘러웨이 위성라디오 'Sway in the Morning'에 출연한 프랭클린은 사회자로부터 "많은 분들이 갈등하고 있는 부분인데요, 동성결혼에 대해 어떻게 생각하세요?"라는 질문을 받았고 다음과 같이 대답했다. 

"먼저, 어떤 사안이든, 저는 항상 교리나 종교에서 말하는 하나님의 말씀으로 시시비비를 가리는 것이 아니라, 제 자신이 하나님의 말씀이라고 생각하는 것들을 통해 세상을 보기 위해 최선을 다할 것입니다."

"저는 먼저 교회가 사람들에게 내뱉은 모든 추하고 고통스러운 말들에 대해 진심으로 사과한다고 말하고 싶습니다. 이런 말들은 아주 혐동성애적 색안경에서 비롯된 것이기 때문입니다. 종종 자신의 입장이나 신앙심을 표현할 때 심각한 동성애혐오증을 드러내며 아주 추하고 상처주는 말을 내뱉는 이들이 있습니다. 이건 결코 예수님 마음의 본질이라고 할 수 업습니다."

"저는 사람들이 어떤 문제를 둘러싸고 하나님의 말씀이 무엇이었는지 논쟁을 벌일 때마다 '로마인들에게 보내는 편지'의 입장을 고수하려고 합니다. 제3장을 보면, '올바른 사람은 없다. 단 한 사람도 없다'고 나와 있습니다. 즉, 하나님의 눈에는 이 지구상의 그 누구도 완벽하지 않다는 것입니다. 그리고 그 다음에는 "모든 사람이 죄를 지었기 때문에 하나님이 주셨던 본래의 영광스러운 모습을 잃어버렸다"는 구절이 나옵니다. 여기에는 저도 여러분도 그리고 이 지구 위에 걸어다니는 모든 사람이 포함됩니다. 하나님의 눈에는 우리 모두가 어딘가 고장이 나 있고, 따라서 당신의 사랑과 은총을 필요로 한다는 거죠"

프랭클린(43)은 이어서 말했다. "만일 우리가 죄인들이 아니라면, 예수님께서는 오시지 않았을 겁니다. 예수님께서 우를 죄인으로 보시지 않는다면, 우리를 위해 죽으시지 않고 사랑하셨을 겁니다. 만일 우리가 죄인들이라면, 우리 모두는 똑같이 사랑과 은혜와 사랑이 필요하다는 것입니다."

MTV에서 DJ를 맡고 있는 사회자 스웨이는 프랭클린에게, "그럼 동성결혼에 아무런 이의가 없다는 거네요?"라며 보다 직접적인 질문을 던졌다. 이에 대해 프랭클린은 재차 "[동성결혼]은 다른 결혼과 다를 바가 없으며, 우리 모두가 은총을 필요로 하는 죄인"이라고 밝혔다.

"성경에서 죄악으로 보는 것 중에는 자만심, 증오 등도 있습니다. 제가 우리 모두가 똑같다고 한 것은 이런 뜻에서 입니다."

이번 인터뷰를 접한 팬들 중에는 "대답 한 번 잘랬다."는 반응이 있었던 반면, 비겁하게 질문을 회피했다는 비난도 따랐다.

리코 윌리엄스라는 시청자는 다음과 같은 반응을 보였다. 

"프랭클린이 '올바른 자는 하나도 없다'는 하나님의 말씀을 언급했듯이, 그것이 무슨 죄든, 결국 죄는 다 같은 죄일뿐이다. 우리 기독교 형제자매들이 타인을 지옥에 떨어뜨리려 안달난 모습을 보면 참 슬프다. 그건 오직 하나님만이 하실 수 있는 일이다. 하나님의 은총은 온 세상을 다 덮는다. 기독교 신자라면 동성결혼이 허용될 수 없다는 것을 잘 알 것이다. 하지만 내 자신도 죄를 짓고 살면서 왜 항상 한 가지 죄악에만 이렇게 혈안이 되어야 하는건가?"

한편, 다른 반응도 있었다.

"스웨이가 똑바로 질문했는데, 프랭클린은 그걸 뒤틀어서 답했어. 프랭클린은 하나님의 말씀을 잘 알고 있으면서도 사회자와 시청자들 앞에서 진실을 부인했어. 우리 모두가 죄인이고 말씀을 잘 알고 있으면서도 사회자와 시청자들 앞에서 진실을 부인했어. 우리 모두가 죄인이고 참회가 필요하다는 건 사실이지만, 사회자는 하나님의 말씀을 기만하는 특정한 생활방식, 또는 삶의 선택에 대해 질문을 던진거야. 그런데 저게 교회의 젊은이들한테 할소리야???"

한 때 동성애자 인권가로 활동했던 자넷 보인즈 씨는 잡시 Charisma Mag 기고문에서 프랭클린의 대답은 '잃어버린 기회'라고 했다. "프랭클린은 하나님의 말씀이 명시하는 부분 즉, 동성애는 죄악이라는 사실을 회피하려는 것처럼 보였다. 대신, 그는 교회가 이 문화적 사안에 있어서 경찰 행세를 하고 다닌다며 장황한 설명을 늘어놓았다."

"프랭클린처럼 독실한 신자가 정의를 위해 맞서지 않고 교회를 욕한다는 것은 실로 슬픈일이다."

"프링클린과 같은 발언대가 우리에게도 주어진다면 적들이 우리 세대에 강요하는 거짓말을 백일천하에 드러낼 것이다. 우리는 지도자로서, 공인으로서, 사랑의 진실이 무엇인지 널리 알릴 필요가 있다. 지금은 바위 뒤에 숨을 때가 아니다. 성경의 입장을 고수하지 않는다면, 죄악이 만연할 것이다. 그런 상황이 벌어진다면, 그것은 우리가 침목하고 대중들에 이끌려 갔기 때문일 것이다. "
